Managing contrasting audio environments, like upbeat electronic music on a gym floor and ambient soundscapes in a spa or relaxation area, requires a multi-zone business music platform that streams separate audio feeds to different rooms from a single central dashboard.
Most facilities run one music stream everywhere. For a small open-floor gym, that is fine. But when a facility has both a high-energy workout area and a spa, recovery room, or sauna, playing one playlist everywhere means one of those environments is always getting the wrong music.
A multi-zone setup through a business music service gives each space its own sound without forcing you to manage separate accounts or rely on a consumer streaming app. With Custom Channels, you also do not pay the full subscription price again for every additional zone.
When Rooms Are Trying to Do Opposite Things
Picture a gym at 6 p.m. on a Thursday. It is packed. Weights are moving. People are deep into their workouts. The music should tell you, the moment you walk in, what this space is for.
Now walk to the recovery room at the back. Someone just finished a hard workout. Their body needs to shift. If the same music motivating the weight room follows them in, the experience is undermined before anyone sits down.
Research published in the National Library of Medicine found that participants listening to music at 130 BPM exercised 10.7% longer than those without music. That is exactly what you want on the gym floor. It is exactly what you do not want in a treatment room.
These rooms are trying to do opposite things. Their music should reflect that.
Should You Map Your Gym Zones?
Start by walking through your space and thinking about how each area should feel. The right background music for a spa and fitness center is rarely one universal playlist. Think about what you want someone to feel the moment they enter each room.
Most gyms will not have all of the spaces listed below, and most will not need this many separate music zones. We included the full list to give you ideas. Use the recommendations that fit your facility, whether that means two zones or several.
| Area | Desired Feel | General Music Direction |
|---|---|---|
| Strength and weight floor | Driven and energetic | High-energy hip-hop, rock, EDM |
| Cardio floor | Rhythmic and consistent | Pop, dance, electronic |
| Group fitness area | High energy, instructor-led | Pop remixes, hip-hop, electronic |
| Lobby and welcome area | Welcoming and upbeat | Contemporary pop and indie |
| Locker rooms | Transitional and relaxed | Chill pop and soft R&B |
| Meditation and stretch rooms | Calm and grounding | Ambient, soft acoustic, instrumental |
| Pool deck and outdoor areas | Warm and unhurried | Chill House or Island Time Instrumentals |
| Treatment and massage rooms | Deeply relaxing | Spa instrumentals, no drums, no vocals |
| Steam rooms and saunas | Ambient and atmospheric | Nature sounds, Spa Nature playlist |
Instructor-led classes can have separate music licensing considerations. See the guide on music licensing for gyms for details.

What Music Works in Spa and Recovery Spaces?
Spa and recovery areas need a little more care; the right background music in a treatment room is almost invisible. The wrong choice is immediately obvious.
Our music team has shaped the spa playlists below over years of feedback from some of our largest spa customers. Each one is built around a specific sound and mood. Some focus on soft guitar, some avoid drums entirely, and others lean into nature sounds. That makes it easier to choose music that fits the room without an unexpected instrument or sound pulling someone out of the experience.
A few strong options for gym and wellness facilities:
- Spa Luna: Meditative ambient instrumentals. The deepest relaxation setting.
- Spa Sol: Tranquil piano and woodwinds, no drums. Clean and gentle.
- Spa Guitar: Peaceful acoustic guitar, no vocals. Restful and unobtrusive.
- Spa Nature: Birdsong, ocean waves, and rain. Built for steam rooms and saunas.
- LoFi Instrumentals: Chill modern instrumental with jazz elements. Good for recovery rooms that want something slightly less traditional.
- Piano Instrumentals: Elegant solo piano. Fits any high-end wellness environment.
All of these are available on Core and Control plans. With Curate, a dedicated music programmer builds and maintains playlists for each zone, adjusting them as the facility and clientele evolve. Depending on the hardware configuration, a wall-mounted control panel can also enable treatment staff to select the right playlist for their room without touching a central system.
How Do You Play Different Music in Different Rooms?
There are two main ways to set up separate music zones: wireless speakers or a traditional wired system.
Wireless speakers
For most small and mid-sized facilities, wireless is the simplest option. We recommend Sonos or Bluesound Professional, both of which integrate directly with Custom Channels.
All you need to do is set up speaker groups, assign a playlist to each group, and each zone plays independently. No additional wiring is required. Sonos works well in smaller and medium-sized spaces. Bluesound Professional is designed for commercial environments and is a stronger fit for larger rooms that need more coverage.
Wired speakers with zone control
A traditional wired setup uses an amplifier with zone control, speakers run to each area, and a separate Custom Channels music player for each zone. Every player streams independently through the same account and dashboard.
For facilities being built or renovated, running wires during construction is usually more cost-effective than retrofitting later. AV installation is also available through the Custom Channels partner network.
What Does Multi-Zone Music for Gyms and Spas Actually Cost?
Most music for business platforms charge full price for every zone. Custom Channels charges $15 per month for each additional zone across all plans.
| Zone Pricing | Custom Channels | Soundtrack | Rockbot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base location price | $25 per month | $37 per zone per month | $25 per zone per month |
| Additional zone price | $15 per month | $37 per zone per month | $25 per zone per month |
| 4-zone facility annual cost | $780 per year | $1,776 per year | $1,200 per year |
| SESAC included | Yes | No | Yes |
| Human curation | Yes | Algorithmic | Algorithmic |

A four-zone facility pays $780 per year with Custom Channels. The same setup costs $1,776 on Soundtrack and $1,200 on Rockbot. Soundtrack’s U.S. plan does not include SESAC coverage. Custom Channels and Rockbot both list SESAC as included.

Start Simple, Then Scale
The simplest starting point is two zones: the workout floor and the recovery or spa area. That one change addresses the biggest mismatch in most facilities and immediately improves the experience for members moving between spaces.
From there, zones can be added as the facility grows. Our Control plan adds scheduling for each zone, so that the music can change automatically throughout the day. The gym floor can move into a higher-energy evening playlist while the spa shifts to something quieter, without anyone having to manage it manually.
A Facility That Sounds as Good as It Looks
Music gets treated as an afterthought in facility planning. Owners spend months on logo colors, wall finishes, and equipment choices. Then they open the doors and realize the audio experience in the fitness center has not been addressed.
Your members notice the smell, the sights, and the sound the moment they walk in. Sound tells people what kind of place this is before they have spoken to anyone or touched a single piece of equipment. It is worth thinking about before the doors open, not after.
Map the spaces. Match the energy. Assign the playlists. Let the system run.
